MASTERWORKS CELEBRATES WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH WITH EXHIBITION AND TWO NEW DISPLAYS

In conjunction with Women’s History Month, Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art is pleased to announce the exhibition Radical Blooms: Female Flora Painters in Bermuda, opening in the Mezzanine Gallery on Friday, March 10th with a reception from 5:30 to 7pm. This exhibition will reveal the myriad ways that female artists have depicted nature, and particularly Bermuda’s flora. In artwork drawn from Masterworks’ Bermudiana Collection and on loan from contemporary artists, visitors can learn about foundational Bermudian artists such as May Middleton, revisit the Bermuda drawings of Georgia O’Keeffe and see a selection of artwork from a new generation of female painters inspired to paint Bermuda’s diverse flora. Radical Blooms will be on display in the Mezzanine Gallery from March 10th to April 15th, 2023.

Masterworks will also be debuting two new displays hailing female artists. The Tucker Legacy Room, on the ground floor, will feature a newly reimagined display about early-twentieth-century Bermudian artists and entrepreneurs, Ethel and Catharine Tucker. Drawn from Masterworks’ impressive collection of watercolour paintings by Ethel and Catharine and historical items from their pioneering commercial establishments, the display will celebrate their artistry and entrepreneurship.

In addition, starting at 5:30pm on March 10th, Masterworks’ Education Officer and professional muralist, Kendra Earls, will begin a series of public painting demonstrations of her large-scale mural entitled Bermuda Overgrown Paradise. This mural is being finished in conjunction with the exhibition  Radical Blooms but will remain a lasting part of the fabric of the Museum. We welcome the public to stop by in an interactive setting as she completes the mural on the 4th-floor landing, outside of the Mezzanine Gallery. As she paints, she will answer any questions about her process and what painting means to her. The mural painting will be taking place throughout the duration of the Radical Blooms exhibition. Please keep an eye on Masterworks’ social media pages for times and dates to see Kendra at work.

Curatorial Researcher Dr. Sara Thom, curator for Radical Blooms, speaks to her inaugural exhibition at the Museum, explaining, ‘I am thrilled that my first exhibition at Masterworks can showcase this incredible range of paintings by female artists. Radical Blooms offers not only beauty but something to think about, and I am especially excited to unveil the new mural painting by Kendra Earls, who I have enjoyed working alongside at Masterworks.’

Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art is open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm. The opening for Radical Blooms, and first live painting demonstration by Kendra Earls, will take place Friday March 10th, from 5:30-7pm. The Tucker Legacy Room will be available to view during Museum opening hours starting March 10th.
