Descendants of Summer: A Preview Exhibition by Nicola Muirhead

Descendants of Summer: A Preview features the work of Bermudian photographer Nicola Muirhead. The exhibition highlights her ongoing documentary series, Descendants of Summer, an eight-year photographic journey examining Bermuda’s rich and complex heritage.

The work investigates the legacies of our island community, exploring the stories of our heroes and heroines, our ghosts and demons, and ultimately the tales that bind us – unpacking the diverse narratives that make up place and identity in Bermuda.

At its core, the project seeks to preserve the oral histories of essential memory keepers of our island, ensuring important testimonies related to our past are documented and shared for future generations through visual storytelling.

In collaboration with local artists, activists, political figures, historians, and environmental conservationists from the island, this exhibition offers a glimpse into Muirhead’s expansive work, captured in a range of mediums including experimental film, digital photography, archival images, video, artefacts, and interviews – a sample of which will be in the exhibition.

Together, these elements highlight the multifaceted realities that have shaped our unique microcosm in the Atlantic.

The public is invited to join us for an opening reception on Friday, October 4, from 5:30 – 7pm. The exhibition will be available to view from October 4 – October 29, 2024.

Artist Bio

Nicola Muirhead, a Bermudian documentary photographer and visual storyteller, specializes in long-form projects and portraiture. Holding a Master’s degree in Documentary Photography and Photojournalism from the University of Arts London (2017) and with a background in International Relations, she operates as a freelance editorial, portrait, and reportage photographer. Additionally, Nicola contributes as a visiting lecturer and educator in photography, possessing a PGcert in Higher Education (2018). A member of Women Photograph, her work has been published in reputable publications such as the BBC, National Geographic, The Smithsonian Magazine, and the Washington Post.
