In his painting, he is attracted to post-colonial themes including land ownership issues, the African diaspora, and the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Gavin’s 2017 body of work focused primarily on Bermuda’s untold slave history; notably, the story and impact of Sally Bassett, as triggered by the installation of her sculpture by Carlos Dowling. His work often employs unorthodox materials, such as denim, diamonds, Bermudian seeds and pink sand, human teeth, iron fillings, and paternal cremains.
