Calling all high schoolers! Are you passionate about the arts? Dive into the captivating world of art history and practice with Masterworks’ exclusive short courses tailored just for you.

Join us this summer for an unforgettable journey through the rich tapestry of Bermuda art.

Meeting on Thursdays, we will take you on a month-long artistic journey in the company of Isabel McLaughlin, Georgia O’Keeffe, E. Ambrose Webster, Karen Kulyk, Winslow Homer and more. Connecting art history discussions, tours, field trips, and art practice, you’ll get a behind the scenes look at museum and gallery spaces, and explore painting and drawing techniques throughout history.

Led by Dr. Sara Thom, Curatorial Researcher, each session will begin with insightful discussions on topics ranging from the depiction of place to the use of color in art.

Building on the historical context, Art Teacher Kimberley Fisher will guide you through related art practices, from observational sketching to plein air painting.

Time: 10am – 3pm (with lunch from 12-1pm)

Dates: Thursdays: July 3 – 24, 2024

Class Size: Maximum of 10 participants to ensure individualized attention and a supportive environment.

Location: Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art, Members Lounge, Butterfield Gallery, Permanent Collection Vault, and wider Botanical Gardens

Field Trips: We will make a field trip to explore a few of Homer’s vantage points in Warwick and Pembroke.

Materials: All necessary art supplies provided.

Week 1: Looking Out, and In
Explore historical and contemporary takes on sense of place in Bermuda art. How do visiting artists’ perspectives differ from local artists’ perspectives of place?

Week 2: Finding Form
Discover form as profoundly as Modernist painters, Isabel McLaughlin and Georgia O’Keeffe.

Week 3: Seeing Color
Study the use of color featuring the works of E. Ambrose Webster and Karen Kulyk.

Week 4: A Double Take
Visit the sites of Homer’s revered Bermuda watercolour paintings and look at Bermuda’s social history through his representations.

Dr. Sara Thom is the Curatorial Researcher at Masterworks Museum. She received her PhD in Art History from the University of Birmingham in 2018. She has extensive teaching experience, including at Birmingham where she taught undergraduate art history lectures and seminars. At Masterworks, Sara focuses on research and curation around the Museum’s Permanent Collection.
