SUMMARY:Family Workshop: Clay Sculpture with Meg Walters
DESCRIPTION:Join exhibiting artist Meg Walters for this 2-part workshop to explore the diverse and experimental properties of clay. Part 1 will be led by Meg Walters and focus on hand-building techniques\, incorporating a versatile paper clay. You will discover different ways to sculpt\, build and model this dynamic clay\, applying stains\, underglaze and slip. Part 2 will be led by Blair Raughley Masters and focus on how to apply glaze from a painterly perspective\, learning techniques to achieve different organic results. If you’re interested in finding more freedom in your practice\, and expanding your knowledge on sculptural hand-building or application of glaze\, this course is for you. \nThis 2-part workshop is offered in connection with Palimpsest\, on view in the Rick Faries Gallery May 1 – June 27\, 2026.  \nFacilitators: Meg Walters and Blair Raughley Masters \nMeg Walters is a visual artist from Bermuda now based in Mulubinba (Newcastle) NSW. She received her Foundation Diploma in Fine Art from Chelsea College in London. This was followed by a Bachelor of Arts (Illustration) from Newcastle University\, Australia. She’s most recently completed her studies at Byron School of Arts in Northern NSW. She has been recognized as a finalist in numerous Art Prizes as well as having had ten solo shows across Australia and internationally. She is the recipient of the 2026 Bundanon Residency Program. Her work is also held in a public collection by the Macquarie Bank in Sydney. \nBlair Raughley Masters is a multidisciplinary artist working in photography and ceramics. She received a BFA in Art and Design with a focus in photography and sculpture in 2012 from Frostburg State University. SUMMARY:Ceramics Studio May Membership
DESCRIPTION:Ceramics Studio is an open studio space for ceramicists to meet up and access equipment to throw\, sculpt and create at their own pace. This space is open to people who have taken Shaping the Basics with Blair Masters or can prove similar experience. While studio members are encouraged to guide and support each other\, creative independence is required. \nRun by a community of ceramicists\, the Ceramics Studio is open from 5-8pm each Thursday. \nHere’s how it works:\n– 9 potter’s wheels are available.\n– 3 spaces at a hand-building table are available.\n– 12 memberships are available for each month.\n– The potter’s wheels are available on a first-come\, first serve basis. Members may be able to share potter’s wheel access as agreed between them.\n– Firings are charged at $1 per lb of greenware and bisqueware\n– Members weigh and record the weight of each piece on a slip of paper and attach to their piece.\n– Members should have their own hand tools.  Toolkits can be purchased for $15 per pack. \nMembership registration process:\n– Ceramics Studio membership is offered on a monthly basis.\n– Registration for each month’s studio membership will open on the 21st of the month before. For example\, August Membership registration will open on July 21st.\n– If members have ready-to-fire pieces at the end of their membership\, their pieces will still be fired in the next scheduled firing. \nStudio guidelines:\n– We are a mid-fire studio; only clay in Masterworks’ inventory are permitted in the studio.\n– Members can purchase studio clay from our inventory for $50 per 25lb bag.\n– Only glazes in Masterworks’ inventory are permitted in the studio\n– Studio storage is limited. SUMMARY:Shaping the Basics: Ceramics with Blair Masters
DESCRIPTION:Join Blair Masters for this 6-week ceramics course where you will learn the fundamentals of clay\, tools\, and techniques of wheel throwing! Ideal for all skill levels looking to start or advance their practice. You’ll have the chance to centre\, throw\, pull walls\, trim\, create surface design\, glaze\, and more. Students will take home a new skillset and up to 3 pieces of pottery! We recommend this course even if you’ve taken similar courses in the past. \nEach week will focus on a specific skill: \n\nWeek 1: Introduction to clay and tools. Students will learn to centre and pull walls on the wheel. We’ll focus on throwing forms\, making cylinders and bowls.\nWeek 2: We will trim and finalize our pieces from Week 1 and students can spend the remainder of class on the wheel with the opportunity to throw additional pieces.\nWeek 3: Trimming and putting final touches on your work before the bisque firing.\nWeek 4: Bisque firing (class doesn’t meet)\nWeek 5: Glazing and preparing your work for the final glaze firing.\nWeek 6: Final firing (class doesn’t meet)\n\nBy the end of the course\, you’ll have completed pieces to take home and a foundation in ceramics to continue your creative journey. DESCRIPTION:Join artist and educator Elena Portius for a two session introduction to reduction lino printing. Over two Wednesday workshops\, participants will learn how to design\, carve\, and print a multi-layered image from a single lino block.
