SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Bill Ming
DESCRIPTION:Artist Talk with Bill Ming | Thursday\, March 20 from 5:30 – 7pm \nJoin us for an artist talk with Bill Ming\, Bermudian artist from the exhibition\, Bermuda: Stories in Memory\, on display in the Rick Faries Gallery. \nArtist BioBill Ming (Bermudian\, b. 1944) was born in Bermuda and settled in England in 1971. He studied at Mansfield College of Art from 1975-6\, and gained his degree in Sculpture and Creative Writing from Maidstone College of Art in 1979. Best known for his sculptures and assemblage works that blur the line between sculpture and collage\, Bill was the first Black artist Henry Moore Sculpture Fellow at John Moores University in 1992-93 and was part of the groundbreaking exhibition The Caribbean Connection in 1995\, which is widely recognised as the first exhibition dedicated to the display of Caribbean art in London. A contemporary of artists such as Denzil Forrester\, Frank Bowling\, Aubrey Williams and Errol LLoyd\, the importance of Ming’s work in connecting Bermudian arts practices within a wider Caribbean and Atlantic art historical canon is immeasurable. \nAs a sculptor\, Ming draws inspiration from personal experiences and a rich cultural heritage that originated in Africa\, the Americas and Europe. His work draws on his transcultural memories and experiences\, most recently connecting deeper with his home country of Bermuda. Ming uses wood and various materials to create cultural collages which reflect the physical and spiritual aspects of life in all forms. \nExhibition Dates: Friday\, March 14 – Tuesday\, May 10\, 2025. \n  \nPhotograph by Steve Edwards Photography.

SUMMARY:"Bermuda: Stories in Memory" Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:Bermuda: Stories in Memory\, an exhibition of new collage works by Bermudian artist Bill Ming\, will open in the Rick Faries Gallery on Friday\, March 14\, 2025. Masterworks has partnered with Bermudian curator Daisy Gould\, who has instigated and guest-curated the exhibition and accompanying publication. \nMing’s new suite of works on show are deeply rooted in Bermuda’s history and culture as well as Ming’s memories of growing up on the island. While Ming is locally known best for his sculptural and assemblage works\, this new body of work\, created between 2023-24\, focuses on Ming’s collage practice. An important element of his artistic oeuvre for many years\, Ming’s collages incorporate maps\, popular images\, scans of foraged foliage\, pages from books\, and even elements from old works. Created in his studio in Newark\, UK\, where he has lived since the 1970’s\, this new body of work is in many ways a return home to Bermuda for the 80-year-old artist. \nAs stated by Daisy Gould\, “In its myriad forms\, Ming’s work continuously contributes to local and global conversations on identity\, ecology\, migration\, and cultural hybridity. His work serves as a powerful tool for reclaiming narratives\, challenging stereotypes\, and asserting agency in the face of historical and contemporary challenges – doing so with humour and grace. By capturing the spirit\, resilience\, and creativity of Bermuda\, Ming’s work aims to not only enrich cultural discourse but also serve as a catalyst for social change and collective empowerment.” \nAll works in Bermuda: Stories in Memory will be available for purchase in person at Masterworks and through the Rick Faries Gallery website. The Shop at Masterworks will also feature a limited-edition run of prints. \n\n\n\n\nBermuda: Stories in Memory will be on view until Tuesday\, May 10\, 2025. \nKey Dates and Events \n\nOpening Reception: Friday\, March 14\, 2025 | 5:30 – 7pm\nCurated Conversations with Daisy Gould: Tuesday\, March 18\, 2025 | 5:30 – 7pm\nArtist Talk: Thursday\, March 20\, 2025 | 5:30 – 7pm\nEntry for Curator’s and Artist’s Talks are free for members and $10 for non-members\n\nCollage and Assemblage Artist Workshop with Bill Ming: Saturday\, March 22\, 2025 | 10am – 12pm\nExhibition Dates: March 14\, 2025 – May 10\, 2025

SUMMARY:"Noise Maker" Exhibition at The Loren Hotel
DESCRIPTION:Noise Maker by Abi Box | February 27 – April 27\, 2025\nOn View in the Marée Lounge at The Loren Hotel \nOpening Reception: Sunday\, March 8 | 5pm – 7pm in the Marée Lounge at The Loren Hotel \nIn collaboration with The Loren Hotel\, Masterworks is thrilled to partner with artist Abi Box for her upcoming exhibition entitled Noise Maker which will be on display in the Marée Lounge at The Loren Hotel. \nArtist Statement: \nThe direction my work has taken in recent years is born partly out of the slapdashery that comes with having added a second child to our family. Paintings derived from fast and erratic drawings that have been thrown together in stolen moments; drawn in whatever is close to hand\, Biros\, pencils\, markers\, felt-tips\, crayons. Structured with little intention\, compositionally they have been worked out through trial and error. Working with masking tape and correction fluid\, off-white clumsy daubs\, obviously\, once mistakes and tatty edges have become part of the poetry; drawing attention to the unintentional. \n  \n\nThese nothing-is-ever-ruined-keep-going-with-it drawings have emboldened my approach to my sometimes and otherwise ‘stuck’ paintings. Emboldened to uncompromisingly obliterate any unsightly or not-working areas with colourful washes or opaque layers of white. Colourful washes are interestingly unpredictable in the way they interact with the layers below. Filtering out some hues and not others\, the odd shape from below can unintentionally and joyfully interrupt the newly worked composition above. Or more drastically\, wiping out areas with a thicker and more opaque layer of white. These almost re-primed areas are prominent in their reflectiveness and seldom conceal; subsequent colours are chromatically here-I-am vivid. Texturally\, whether they’re rough and chalky or smooth and glossy\, these whited out areas clash with the otherwise thin washes or any parts of the canvas that have remained reasonably raw. \nThese interactions\, both intentional and unintentional\, have driven this whole body of work\, in some capacity\, towards texture. Visibly layered surfaces\, thin translucent washes covered with rough and opaque\, or heavily saturated\, brushwork. In the way that the dry brushwork catches the weave of the canvas\, like worn tapestries the paintings have a patchy and threadbare quality to them. While simultaneous contrasts create sense of depth; glowing opaque pastels pinging against dull atmospheric translucency. \n  \nOnline Sales: \n\nExhibition works will be available for purchase on rickfariesgallery.com for the duration of the show. SUMMARY:Curated Conversations | Stealing the Show: Crime in the Contemporary Art World with Dr. Sara Angel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the next Curated Conversations\, a Masterworks Lecture Series\, with Sara Angel on Thursday\, February 20 from 5:30 – 7pm. \nStealing the Show: Crime in the Contemporary Art World \nThe international art world is the biggest unregulated market apart from illicit drug trafficking and a very dangerous place\, populated by a multitude of unscrupulous figures. In her talk Stealing the Show art crime expert Dr Sara Angel will look at numerous cultural felonies to consider theirs motivations and implications in a global context. She will discuss a range of illegal art-related action—including museum thefts\, vandalism\, looting\, smuggling\, copyright infringements\, frauds and forgeries—and analyze the negotiations through which some activities in the art world are criminalized while others are deemed unethical but legal. \nDr Angel will address the world of art crime through specific case studies to consider both the causes that have brought them about\, as well as the ramifications they leave behind. \nFinally\, Stealing the Show will highlight representations of art crimes in popular culture where it has enjoyed a longstanding and prominent position\, at times often making illicit acts seem exciting\, even glamorous.  \nBio for Sara Angel\, CM\, PhD \nSara Angel teaches courses on both Nazi-era art restitution as well as art crime at York University\, Toronto\, where she is an adjunct professor. Angel’s doctoral dissertation was on the restitution of Montreal art dealer Max Stern’s Nazi-looted art. Angel has been a guest lecturer at Harvard University\, the University of Toronto\, Ryerson University\, the Royal Ontario Museum\, the Art Gallery of Ontario\, the National Gallery of Canada\, and the Israel Museum. \nDr Angel is the Founder\, Executive Director and Publisher of the Art Canada Institute (ACI). She launched it in 2013 to democratize the country’s visual culture for a diverse\, multi-vocal\, twenty-first century audience\, and to make it available to all\, regardless of one’s proximity or access to a bricks-and-mortar museum or knowledge of the subject. Today\, ACI is a national institution and the leading digital initiative in Canadian art research\, education\, and promotion\, which makes knowledge on the subject available to all free-of-charge. \nIn 2024\, Angel received the Order of Canada in recognition of her contribution to the Canadian art world. She holds a PhD from the University of Toronto\, where she received a Trudeau Doctoral Scholarship\, the most prestigious award of its kind in Canada\, given to support innovative ideas that help solve issues of critical importance. She has been an arts commentator for CBC and writes for publications including Maclean’s\, ArtNews\, The Walrus\, and the Globe and Mail. Dr Angel lives in Toronto with her husband and three children. \nDate: Thursday\, February 20 from 5:30 – 7pm\nEntry: free for members | $20 for non-members \nFireside Chat at Tucker’s Point with Dr. Sara Angel \nIn addition\, Tucker’s Point will host a fireside chat at The Grille Room on Saturday\, February 22nd from 5:00 – 6:30pm\, where Angel will be in conversation with Masterworks’ Curatorial Researcher Dr. Sara Thom. \nEntry to the event is complimentary\, drinks for purchase and bar snacks will be provided. \nRSVP sydney.wallace@rosewoodhotels.com

SUMMARY:What Watercolour Can Be
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, we will break away from traditional methods to explore alternative techniques within the medium of watercolour. Challenging the conventional approach of painting carefully from lightest to darkest colors while preserving the tone of the paper for the brightest highlights\, we’ll embrace a more intuitive process that allows for greater creative flexibility. You will be encouraged to work and rework your painting to the point where the paper begins to deteriorate\, transforming imperfections and gnarled textures into opportunities to challenge the expectations of the medium. \nWe will focus on painting from both memory and imagination\, while also allowing ourselves to respond to abstract forms that emerge spontaneously in the paint. We will look towards interior images within the mind for inspiration rather than what we can see with our eyes. This class is designed for people who are eager to take risks and abandon established technique in favour of a freer approach to creation. \nCome prepared to experiment\, push the boundaries of watercolour\, and uncover new ways to express your unique artistic vision. \nDate: Tuesday\, January 28\, 2025 \nTime: 6-8pm \nArtist Facilitator: Zachary Marshall \nClass Size: Maximum of 12 participants to ensure individualized attention and a supportive environment. \nLocation: Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art’s Classroom \nMaterials provided: All supplies provided. \nWorkshop Fee: $75 Members/$125 Non-members; practising artist rate application here; Under-18 bursary application here. \nImportant reminder: A cancellation must be made 14 days before the registration program start date to receive a refund.  No refund will be given within 14 days of the program date.

DESCRIPTION:Identity\, an upcoming exhibition of new works by Bermudian multidisciplinary artists Vaughronde’ and Lisa Joseph\, will open in the Rick Faries Gallery on Friday\, November 1\, 2024. \nIdentity will feature work in a range of mediums depicting and celebrating Bermuda’s Gombey culture as a dynamic art form. The exhibition will showcase paintings\, jewellery\, purses\, and figurines as well as original Gombey masks and regalia. \nAbout the Artists:\nVaughronde’ and Lisa Joseph are key members of the Island’s Gombey community and established the Vibe Tribe group in 2023. From dignitaries to performers\, artists\, cultural ambassadors\, and Bermudians in general\, we want everyone to see themselves represented. As artists and founders of one of the Island’s newest Gombey groups\, art is a huge part of our lives and our story. Whether it be with paint\, fabric\, metal\, clay or through performing\, we are always creating in our household\, with each other and with the rest of our family. \nThe heavy presence of Gombey influence is evident throughout almost all of our work.  This is our way of paying homage to the beauty of Gombeys and the very significant part it plays in our lives. We want to give people a view into the side of Gombeys that is usually hidden and aim to showcase the Gombey community in a way that most people have not had the opportunity to see before. This is a chance to pause and appreciate Gombeys in a way that you would normally miss. \nIdentity will be on view until Tuesday\, December 3\, 2024. \nKey Dates and Events \n\nOpening Reception: Friday\, November 1 | 5:30 – 7pm\nArtist Talk: Thursday\, November 7 | 5:30 – 7pm\nEntry is free for members and $10 for non-members\nExhibition Dates: November 1 – December 3\, 2024

SUMMARY:Flora in Flux: Shaping Identity Artist Talk with Claire Peverelli and Stratton Hatfield
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, October 17 from 6 – 7:30pm in the Marée Lounge of the Loren Hotel for an artist talk with the artists behind Flora in Flux: Shaping Identity.  \nAbout the Artists:\nClaire is a psychotherapist and an artist who has a passion for exploring themes of psychology\, nature\, and identity through various media and modalities. Stratton is a Bermudian multidisciplinary artist who focuses on social and environmental issues\, blending art and design to inspire change. Stratton has been developing his practice in fossilizing local flora for several years and when his wife\, Claire\, moved to the island they began collaborating and explored larger compositions together. \nAbout the Exhibition:\nIn collaboration with The Loren Hotel\, we are kicking off the Bermuda Tourism Authority’s Art Month with the opening of Flora in Flux: Shaping Identity\, an exhibition by artists Claire Peverelli and Stratton Hatfield. The exhibition will be on display in the Marée Lounge of the Loren Hotel from Tuesday\, October 1 until Thursday\, October 31. The public is invited to join for an opening reception on Tuesday\, October 1\, from 6 – 8pm. \nFlora in Flux: Shaping Identity explores Bermuda’s evolving identity through its changing landscape\, using flora as a metaphor for the Island’s shifting demographics. The exhibition intertwines the forms of endemic\, native\, and invasive plant species reflecting the complexities of Bermuda’s identity. The artists use the Island’s flora to provoke a deeper reflection on how human choice shapes Bermuda’s past\, present\, and future\, as is reflected in the landscape. \nThe sculptures\, with their organic forms juxtaposed against rigid concrete\, underscore the island’s delicate balance between maintaining cultural identity and adapting to new social realities. By capturing and fossilising the unique geometry of these plants\, the artists take a snapshot of the landscape’s evolution\, examining the tension between preservation and disruption. The endemic and native plants\, long adapted to the island’s unique environment\, represent the resilience of the Bermudian population\, while the introduced and sometimes invasive species symbolise the influence of new\, external forces. \nThis body of work invites viewers to consider how Bermuda’s natural and social landscapes are intertwined\, each influencing the other\, encouraging dialogue on the need for connection\, balance and conscious stewardship in both the natural and cultural spheres. \n
