SUMMARY:Premiere Film Screening of Janet Fish: Catching Light
DESCRIPTION:Premiere Film Screening of Janet Fish: Catching Light | April 16\, 5:30 – 7:30pm \nJoin us on Thursday\, April 16\, for a premiere film screening of Janet Fish: Catching Light\, a short documentary that explores the life and art of celebrated American artist Janet Fish (1938-2025) who spent her formative years growing up on the island of Bermuda. This special closing event is to mark the end of the landmark exhibition Janet Fish: Place in Time. The film takes the audience on a cinematic journey\, combining breathtaking visuals with intimate interviews and beautiful representations of Janet Fish’s paintings. The film shares insights into Fish’s unique ability to capture light and the importance of reflection\, time\, and space in her work. \nThe audience is invited into her process; her mastery of colour and movement in the ‘still’ life form. As interviewee Lindsay Wragga says ‘She brought life into everything she touched. Her paintings made the objects more alive than they were without her…brighter than the sun’. \nGuests will have time to explore the exhibition before settling in for the 30-minute film screening\, followed by a Q&A with the documentary’s director and producer\, Paul McGuire. Janet Fish: Catching Light incorporates interviews with artist Robert Kushner\, art historian Vincent Katz\, gallerist Bridget Moore\, Janet’s partner of decades\, artist Charles Parness\, alongside former assistants\, models for paintings and friends. Together with archival photographs and a sumptuous selection of her oil on canvas paintings\, the film explores Janet’s commitment to pushing boundaries and blazing her own path. Janet once said\, ‘I see light as energy\, and energy is always moving through us. I don’t see things as being separated. I paint through the painting because everything is part of everything else.’ \nThe film shares insights into Janet Fish’s unique ability to capture light and the importance of reflection\, time\, and space in her work. The audience is invited into her process; her mastery of colour and movement in the “still” life form. As interviewee Lindsay Wragga says\, ‘She brought life into everything she touched. Her paintings made the objects more alive than they were without her…brighter than the sun.’ Director and Producer\, Paul McGuire says\, ‘It is a great honour to be premiering the film at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art\, on an island where Janet spent close to a decade of her teenage years\, a place whose vibrant colours and amazing light inspired Janet’s unique creativity throughout her career.’ ‘As a filmmaker\, it can be challenging to create a documentary that encapsulates the subject’s life. Janet’s work\, the words of her peers\, and those she loved\, made creating this film unforgettable.’ \nAdmittance: free for members | $25 for non-members.\nTicket includes one complimentary drink. \nJanet Fish: Catching Light Credits\nDirector: Paul McGuire\nEditor: Vanessa Gould\nComposer: Bartoz Gruchala\nDirector of Photography: Nelson Hume \nThank you to Rosewood Bermuda for their generous support of this event.

SUMMARY:Opening: Palimpsest | Meg Walters
DESCRIPTION:Palimpsest | May 1\, 2026 – June 27\, 2026 \n\nKey Dates:\nOpening Reception: Friday\, May 1 | 5:30 – 7pm\nArtist Talk: Thursday\, May 7 | 5:30 – 7pm\nFamily Workshop (2-part series): Clay Sculpture: Saturdays: May 9 and June 6 | 10am – 12:30pm \nPalimpsest presents a body of work shaped by a life lived between Bermuda and Australia. Through layered imagery and painterly gestures\, this exhibition explores impermanence\, displacement\, and the evolving idea of home. Walters offers a contemporary perspective on Bermuda’s landscape\, filtered through distance\, memory\, and dual belonging.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtist Statement: My upcoming exhibition with Masterworks is a visual collection of places and stories. Having spent half of my life in Bermuda and half of my life in Australia\, the transient imagery is meant to impart a sense of impermanence.  Fleeting moments\, not quite fully distilled\, float across the canvas to invoke the impression of never completely belonging to one place or another. The idea of ‘home’ is questioned as well as an inquiry into our connection to place and ourselves. \nBeing able to showcase my work in Bermuda after building a career in Australia over the past eight years is a significant landmark for me. My time living off the island has allowed me to interrogate the landscape and history of Bermuda from a lens of objectivity\, integrating my own Australasian perspective. I look forward to sharing a uniquely contemporary take on Bermuda and its landscape and people. \n– Meg Walters \n\nArtist Bio: Meg Walters is an emerging multi-disciplinary artist from Bermuda who now lives and works in Newcastle\, NSW (Mulubinba). She has been a finalist in The Glover Prize\, The Portia Geach Memorial Art Award\, The Fisher Ghost Art Prize\, The Hawkesbury Art Prize and she will be a participating in the 2026 Bundanon Residency. She has held ten solo shows and her works are held in private and public collections in Australia and internationally.\n\n\n\nWalters received her Foundation Diploma in Fine Art from Chelsea College in London followed by a Bachelor of Arts (Illustration) from Newcastle University\, Australia. More recently\, she continued her studies at Byron School of Arts in Northern NSW before returning to Newcastle where she now lives and works with her partner and two children.

SUMMARY:Opening: Visions of the Vernacular: Architecture in the Masterworks Collection
DESCRIPTION:Visions of the Vernacular: Architecture in the Masterworks Collection\nin the Butterfield Gallery\nMay 2 – September 12\, 2026 \nJoin us for the opening of our upcoming exhibition in the Butterfield Gallery\, Visions of the Vernacular: Architecture in the Masterworks Collection. The Museum will host an opening reception on Friday\, May 1\, from 5:30-7pm. The exhibition will be on display from May 2 0 September 12\, 2026. \nArchitecture is a crucial component of what makes Bermuda so historically and visually unique. Throughout the Island’s modern history\, local and visiting artists have reflected this by foregrounding Bermuda’s architectural vernacular as a subject in their work – studying\, celebrating\, and re-interpreting its forms. Visions of the Vernacular: Architecture in the Masterworks Collection presents selected works of art from the Permanent Collection\, dating from the early nineteenth century to the present day\, which illustrate the distinctive character of Bermuda houses and the Island’s broader built landscape. \nVisions of the Vernacular: Architecture in the Masterworks Collection highlights fundamental elements of Bermudian architecture which artists in the Permanent Collection represent from a variety of perspectives – depicting the geometric patterns of rooflines\, the half-secluded spaces of verandas\, and the framing forms of gates and pillars. These images invite the viewer to consider the social functions and symbolic meanings of these and other vernacular architectural features\, as understood by the people living within and around them as well as the artists illustrating them. \nThe exhibition is complemented by a participatory installation by Kimberley Fisher\, functioning as both a workshop and shared art-making space. The installation encourages reflection on vernacular forms as spaces of memory\, identity\, and lived experience. \nVisions of the Vernacular: Architecture in the Masterworks Collection was curated by Dr Sara Thom and Max Grainge.
